We’re rounding out the Masculine Journey! There’s two more left and today we’re examining the Artist.
He’s a man who’s unconventional in expression, but conventional in values.
It’s instinctual for the artist to be expressive and protective. It seems unrelated at first, but to create meaningful art you have to give a piece of yourself for it to connect with someone else. It’s a vulnerable process.
Conscious or not, the artist embodies this cycle in his craft & relationships.

His process to feel, intuit and create is VERY different than producing results. Society has quietly, but not so quietly assigned gendered roles. Women create for beauty. Men create for efficiency.
His natural strengths are not perceived as masculine. Reconciling the double standard is met with frustration. I believe his out bursts reflect his desire to be recognized and respected for his contribution.
The feeling of being misunderstood is similar to the Creative Genius. The distinction between these two archetypes is their professional fields. The Creative Genius is more likely to find himself in the hard sciences or technology.
Even if the “CG” hasn’t garnered proper recognition, there’s more respect associated with his field. The artist leans more towards the creative arts. He may appear more masculine than the CG, but his path to success will likely be judged more harshly.
His task is to embrace his flow while identifying fulfilling responsibilities. The structure will balance his psyche and actually enhance his craft if he allows for it.
This archetype could be a painter, composer, director, writer, landscaper, or even a tattoo artist.
What do they have in common?
Depicting and emotion.
The artist creates catharsis. He invites you to go deeper. Not an overhaul like the recluse. But in subtle ways unbeknowest to you.
One thing I’ve observed from reviewing his biographies is his sex life is on the wild side. Not wreckless like the King or Warrior who are known for high body counts. Artist men tend to focus on their marriage or partner but are also taboo, kinky or unconventional.
This can be a point of tension for his partner or incredibly liberating. All depending on his relationship with control and freedom.
I’ve observed stark parallels between the Artist and the King. Both desire stable relationships and a solid circle. Both are drawn to being the head of the house. Both lean towards control to soothe their emotions and receive a desired outcome.
What’s the defining factor that separates these two?
Self-belief.
The King knows he’s a natural leader. The Artist makes a point to convince himself.

One quality that could turn dangerous quickly… keeping up with appearances. There is wisdom in moderation. However, in extreme forms the Artist can turn into Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and become abusive behind closed doors.
The public appearance is to save face while pacifying his perceived short comings. At home, his true frustrations come out. In attempt to feel in control he keeps his family under his thumb. Outbursts become a normal occurrence. He must come to terms with the fact that his frustration is internal, not external. Adopting society’s view that his approach to life is subpar creates feelings of unworthiness. His guilt, shame and feelings of defeat become a pot of boiling water.
His path regarding women and expression is coming to terms with these questions.
Can you control your ladies’ response? Can you control her emotional range? Can you control how she evolves?
No.
Can you control how people respond? Can you control the creative flow? Can you control what people take away?
No.
But he can control how he show’s up and owns how he delivers his truth.
The relationship between control and freedom is the true test of how the Artist will embody his blueprint skillfully or unskillfuly.
In it’s worst form, ownership can turn into abuse for the sake of control. In his best, he becomes fearless in who he is and how he shows up as a creative man.
This is the freedom he’s truly seeking.
When he realizes control and freedom are compliments, he reveals a brilliant, passionate, sensual man. One who paved his own path to the top when others told him he’d never get there.
