My parents are pretty cute. And today would be the day to describe to you in great detail how.
But I want to take a different angle and share a story about my dad as a bachelor. Before he built his agency and owned his business, he was a phone salesman. Telemarketing in the 80’s was a different beast. Especially when you’re selling something as exciting as franchises and construction bonds.
I think it goes without saying, sales isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Let alone telemarketing in the 1980’s talking to busy, burly men who have better things to do than chat on the phone. (My dad said the most effective sales pitch was to be quick and question their masculinity…. suggesting they weren’t man enough to buy from him. Hilarious.)
My dad loves selling, loves a challenge and loves doing both to make money. Before the customers came to him, he held his own, hustled and worked the strategies.
Even with all that being said, there was still rejection, hang ups and rough conversations.
He told me this is what he used to do.
He kept a stack of notecards by his phone. It documented all of the successful calls, rewarding experiences, the “moon beams” as he calls them. It was an effective system for him to stay on track and remember what’s possible when it felt impossible.
A couple of years ago, I started implementing a system of my own. I took screenshots. As I’ve been sharing my ideas online and constantly challenging my vulnerability, each piece of support has made a huge a difference. Sometimes, perfectly timed in moments where I really needed it.
Whenever I’m not feeling on top, I’ll go to the album I created where they all reside. Reminding myself of the impact of putting myself out there and what’s possible.
Even if you’re not into commercial holidays, instagram love or cheap candy, the love you put out doesn’t have to be cheesy. Don’t let hallmark’s depiction fool you. Any time you recognize someone in their element and choose to acknowledge them, that’s love.
Here’s 14 screenshots in my support album. They range from one-line story replies, pictures, text encouragement, content appreciation and every day compliments.
You’re welcome to read them, but that’s not my point. It’s more important for me to encourage you to speak up when someone genuine inspires something genuine within you. It’s not hollywood love. But it might be a spark ignited in you meant to keep the fire burning in another.
It may not even feel like love from your perspective, but each message someone took the time to send landed immediately in my heart. Sometimes the little things have the biggest impact.
P.S. Keep track of your own tokens of appreciation while you’re at it. You’re doing good things too, and deserve the reminder. They’re nice to have handy. Happy Valentine’s Day. <3 - Eleanor
